Vòng Tay Học Trò: Sẽ Kết Hôn Cô Giáo
SEATTLE - 20/05/2005
Mary Kay Letourneau (born January 30, 1962), née Mary Katherine Schmitz, is a former American teacher. She is known for having a sexual relationship with an underage pupil, Vili Fualaau. She was convicted of statutory rape.
Mary Kay Schmitz married Steve Letourneau on June 30, 1984. The couple had two daughters and two sons together.
Mary Kay's father was John G. Schmitz, a Congressman from Orange County, California. He was generally considered one of the more conservative members of the House, and ran for the Presidency in 1972 on the American Independent Party ticket.
Letourneau first met Vili Fualaau (born June 24, 1983) when he was a student in her second-grade class at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington.
He was seven years old; she was 27.
She was his teacher again in the sixth grade, and the relationship became sexual during the summer of 1996, when he was 13.
Her husband discovered her relationship with Fualaau when he read her love letters to him in February, 1997, and revealed it to family members: a cousin reported the relationship to child protective services and Mary Kay was arrested for statutory rape on February 26, 1997.
Four months later she gave birth to a daughter fathered by her student. On August 7, 1997 she pled guilty to two counts of second-degree statutory rape. She was sentenced to spend 80 more days in jail, and enrolled in a sexual deviancy treatment program. She was released from jail early (January 6, 1998), for good behavior, and was forbidden from seeing Fualaau.
On February 3, 1998 police discovered Letourneau having sexual intercourse in a car with Fualaau and arrested her for violating the conditions of her suspended sentence. She had also failed to complete her sexual deviancy treatment program. The original sentence of 89 months was reimposed.
In March, 1998, it was revealed that Letourneau was again pregnant with Fualaau's child: their second daughter was born in October 1998.
Steve Letourneau filed for divorce in May 1999 and has custody of his four children. He moved to Alaska and lives under a different last name.
The sentence imposed on Mary Kay Letourneau was the subject of much debate: because the abused child was male some consider the offense lesser than if he were female: the law does not. Mary Kay's subsequent comments make clear that she believes she has done nothing wrong.
In 2000 Fualaau's family sued the town he attended school in for emotional suffering, lost wages, and the costs of rearing his two children, claiming the school had failed to protect him from Letourneau's sexual advances. The jury found against them and no damages were awarded.
Mary Kay and Vili Fualaau wrote a book together, Un seul crime, l'amour which was published in France.
Mary Kay Letourneau was released on parole on August 4, 2004. On 6 August, 2004 Fualaau, who was by then 21, applied to the court to raise the no-contact order; the request was granted.
Mary Kay and Vili Fualaau were married on May 20th, 2005. The former May Kay Letourneau now goes by the name Mary Kay Fualaau.
Washington v. Letourneau
Original Sentencing from November 14, 1997
Should a teacher who had sex with a sixth-grade student and who later bore his child be sent to prison for seven years? That is the question King County Superior Court Judge Linda Lau faced when she sentenced former reacher Mary Kay Letourneau in a hearing aired live on Court TV on November 14, 1997. Letourneau pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape on August 7,1997. Prosecutors sought a six-and-a-half year prison term for Letourneau.
Nov.14: After pleading guilty to child rape, Mary Kay Letourneau was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of counseling
A Forbidden Affair
Letourneau, 35, first met her young lover when he was a student in her second-grade in Shorewood Elementary School, which is in a suburb of Seattle, Wash. The boy and Letourneau developed a friendship that continued even when she was his teacher once again in the sixth grade. However, their relationship reportedly became sexual as he entered the seventh grade. They reportedly had sex twice, once in Letourneau's home and once in her car, between June 1996 and February 1997. At the time of her affair, Letourneau was married mother of four children.
Suspicion about the affair between Letourneau and her student began in February after Letourneau's husband, Steven, discovered love letters written by his wife to the then 13-year-old. Steven told his relatives about the letters and his suspicions, and they contacted Washington child protective services. Letourneau was arrested in the parking lot of Shorewood Elementary School in the last week of February. Soon after her arrest, the school district suspended her from her job without pay. At the time of Letourneau's arrest, she was pregnant with her young lover's child. She gave birth to the baby, a girl, in May 1997, making her former student a father at age 14.
Since the disclosure of his wife's affair, Steven Letourneau has filed for divorce and moved with their four children to Alaska. Mary Kay Letourneau was imprisoned after her guilty plea in August. Her young lover's mother is caring for the newborn baby and has said that "Letourneau is a human being who made one horrible mistake." Prior to the sentencing hearing, the student's mother said that Letourneau should receive mercy from the court. The victim, whose name remains concealed, has claimed in interviews that his relationship with Letourneau was "real love" and that he does not consider himself a victim in any way.
Mary Kay Letourneau was sentenced to six months in jail and three years of counseling in a community-based program for sex offenders. Because she had already served 100 days of the sentence since her guilty plea in August, Letourneau had serve only the remaining 80 days of the sentence. Before receiving her sentence, Letourneau tearfully told the Judge Linda Lau, "I did something that I had no right to do, morally or legally. It was wrong and I am sorry."
"It will not happen again," Letourneau continued. "Please help me...help us all."
Judge Lau cited the wishes of Letourneau's victim and his family in her granting Letourneau the light sentence. However, Judge Lau ordered Letourneau to stay away from the 14-year-old boy and warned her that she would be sent to prison for seven years if she violated the conditions of her sentence.
